Information System Threats

13-Mar-2008 Computer security is a pertinent topic in business discussions. The convergence of tools and technologies together with advances in communications has meant new security challenges for the information security fraternity.

We find numerous examples of computer security breaches and information theft in the media as well as web discussions. Implementation of computer security is complicated by various factors like the selection of applicable protection mechanisms, cost of these protection mechanisms and applicable laws, regulations and directives in the USA.

The objective of security and a security program is to protect a company and its assets. One of the vital steps during the implementation phase of a security program is to conduct a risk analysis. This step identifies the assets of an organization and unveils potential threats that could put an organization at risk. The results of the risk analysis can assist management to budget for these preventative measures. This process is vital in protecting the organizations assets from identified threats and assist in the development of adequate security policies and procedures.

A threat is any potential danger to information or systems. It is the objective of this presentation to discuss the top known threats to businesses, organizations and communities in general.

About the Presenter

Daniël Mostert is a self-driven, results-focused and resourceful senior leader with a superlative track record of achievement. He has over 15 year experience in directing both strategic and tactical systems initiatives within organizations. He obtained a PhD from the Rand Afrikaans University in South Africa in 1994. The title of his thesis was: “Integrating Computer security, Safety and Resilience into User requirements”. He also published various articles in the Journal of Systems, Software and Computers & Security.
